The result of the body's failure to produce insulin, the hormone that "alerts" the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and refuel them. It is estimated that 5-10% of Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is generally diagnosed in children, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin -- needed to convert glucose  starches and other food into fuel for life.

Conditions associated with type 1 diabetes include hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, ketoacidosis and celiac disease. There is a lot of information available free from your doctor, so look for more information about insulin, choosing blood glucose meters, various diagnostic tests including the A1c test, managing and checking your blood glucose, kidney and islet transplantations.

Complications
Suffering from type 1 diabetes increases your risk for serious complications. Some complications of type 1 diabetes include: heart disease (cardiovascular disease), blindness (retinopathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), and kidney damage (nephropathy). Ask your health care provider on the latest medications and diets to help cope with these complications.
